Legal Research Jump Start: Research Trail/Log

This guide is designed to help first year students learn about various types of legal research resources and how to use them effectively. As the fall semester progresses, new tabs introducing different resources will be added.

Page Explanation

A research trail or log is a tool to help you track your research. This is an important skill to develop in law school because in practice you will be managing many different projects at once, and working with other people on the same projects. A trail helps you track what you have done on a particular project, continue your research at a later date, or explain what you have done to others (supervisors or others collaborating with you).

Sample Research Issue

Throughout this guide, there will be sample research trails for the various resources.  For our sample research trails, we will use the following hypothetical situation:

Your client Molly rents an apartment from Happy Homes Apartments. Four weeks ago, she noticed mold in her apartment. At the same time, she began having a runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, and headaches. Her doctor said these were caused by the mold and she should move. Molly contacted her landlord, and he tried to remove the mold, but it came back in a few days. Molly then moved out and stopped paying rent. Happy Homes has sued Molly for unpaid rent.

Research whether Molly has a defense of constructive eviction due to an uninhabitable apartment.
