Law Reviews & Journals: Research and Publishing Guide

A guide with information on resources for cite checks, Bluebooking, writing, and publishing articles.

Electronic Publishing - Mitchell Hamline Open Access

The Library works with Mitchell Hamline's law reviews/journals to publish and archive electronic versions of their issues on Mitchell Hamline Open Access, the School's digital repository of scholarly content.

Articles posted on Mitchell Hamline Open Access are also automatically posted on the Digital Commons Law Network. The Law Network is a free, open access collection of law review articles, book chapters, briefs, working papers, conference proceedings, and other original scholarly work from over 50 U.S. law schools. Inclusion of Mitchell Hamline law journal/review articles on the Law Network exposes them to a much larger audience than only posting them on the journal/review's websites.

Additionally, the Mitchell Hamline Open Access platform has refined its search engine optimization to ensure that posted journal articles will quickly be indexed by Google and Google Scholar.

Open Access Electronic Publishing Process

  • Each fall, the Library staff meets with the incoming editorial teams of the the reviews/journals to provide an overview of Open Access and to answer any questions editors may have about electronic publishing.
  • When an issue is ready for publication, the editors email the following to Sean Felhofer:
    • Word versions (.docx format) of the of the issue's articles. The articles will be assessed for accessibility and remediated if necessary. Remediation involves editing the underlying markup of a Word document and does not affect the look or layout of an article.
    • A filled out Open Access Journal Article Metadata spreadsheet (saved in .xls format) that contains information about each article in the issue.
  • The Library converts the accessible Word versions of the articles to PDF.
  • The Library uploads the issue article PDFs and the metadata spreadsheet to Open Access and notifies the editors when the issue is available online.
  • The Library provides download statistics for individual articles and issues upon request.
