Self Help Resources

This guide provides information for people who want to represent themselves in legal situations in Minnesota.

Types of Law Libraries

Each Minnesota county has a public law library where you can do your own legal research. In the metro area, these libraries are staffed with reference librarians to help you narrow down your topic and find what you are looking for.

The three law schools in the Twin Cities also have law school libraries where you may look at legal resources. While law school libraries are open longer hours, and have a helpful staff, these libraries are not specifically set up to help public patrons.

In both types of libraries, reference librarians are specifically forbidden from giving legal advice to patrons. While they can try to help you find the particular law you may be looking for, they cannot help you interpret it.
